Wildcat Trail is now permanently closed.

Because of heavy trail damage caused by a massive downed tree, we are unable to perform a fix that would result in a sustainable, permanent solution. Wildcat trail will remain closed indefinitely.


2018 Program Schedule

Stay tuned for family programs and environmental education workshops starting in late March, 2018.

Workshops open to the public, non-formal and formal educators.

Non-formal educators -- Earn hours toward your NC Environmental Education Certification. Workshops hours can count toward Criteria II, Outdoor Experience or Continuing Education Credit.

Join our Forest Rangers for an easy hike to observe and identify early spring wild flowers. Call now (828 692-0100) or email holmesESF.ncfs@ncagr.gov to reserve your spot! You must sign up for this program to participate. We are likely to see some early ephemerals such as Oconee Bells, Trout Lilies, Bloodroot, and more! The program is limited to 20 people but if there is enough interest another hike may be offered. We will meet at the main kiosk in the parking lot at 10am. We recommend bringing comfortable shoes, a water bottle, a camera, and a wildflower field guide. The guided hike is set to end at 12pm but there is much more at Holmes Educational State Forest that you can explore on your own time! We offer secluded picnic areas and a variety of educational exhibits.

    Guided Mushroom Hike (2 different times offered!)

A guided introduction to the world of fungi. Come explore our rich cove forest with Ranger Dwigans in search of various fungi. First, we will discuss the history, toxicity, ecology, biology, medicinal uses, and edibility of mushrooms that are common to our area followed by a foray into the forest. You MUST sign up for this program to participate. Call now (828 692-0100) or email holmesESF.ncfs@ncagr.gov to reserve your spot! You must sign up for this program to participate. Program is limited to 12 participants however other hikes will be scheduled if there is enough interest. We will meet in the shelter near the parking area. The program is set to end at 12pm but there is much more at Holmes Educational State Forest that you can explore on your own time. We offer hiking trails, secluded picnic areas, and a variety of educational exhibits. We recommend you ring comfortable shoes, a water bottle, a camera, and a mushroom field guide if you have one.

    Fall Tree ID Hike

Join Ranger Kinsella on a short hike to experience the beauty of fall foliage! Learn to identify 10 common tree species and discuss the basics of photosynthesis, biochemistry, and the process of leaf color change.
